Phần Language focus của Unit 7: World Population (Dân số thế giới) tập trung vào các cấu trúc ngữ pháp thường gặp cũng như ôn tập về cách phát âm của từ. Dưới đây là lời giải của bài giúp các em nắm chắc kiến thức, học và làm bài tập tốt hơn.

Exercise 1. Practise reading the following words, paying attention to the cluster of consonants /kl/, /gl/, /kr/, /gr/, and /kw/. (Thực hành đọc các từ sau đây, chú ý đến các âm tiết /kl/, /gl/, /kr/, /gr/và /kw/.)

Exercise 2. Write the words in Exercise I which contain sounds /kl/, /gl/, /kr/, /gr/, and /kw/ in their correct columns below. (Viết các từ của bài tập 1 chứa các âm /kl/, /gl/, /kr/, /gr/ và /kw/ vào đúng cột theo phát âm của nó.)

Exercise 3: Put the words in brackets into the correct form. Add "’ll/will" or "'’d/would" if neccessary. (Đặt những từ trong ngoặc về dạng đúng. Thêm "’ll/will" hoặc "’d/would" nếu cần.)

• 1. If someone (walk) __walked___ in here with a gun, I’d be very frightened. (Nếu ai đó đi bộ đến đây với một cây súng, tôi sẽ rất sợ hãi.)
• 2. I’m sure she (understand) ___will understand___ if you explain the situation to her. (Tôi chắc chắn cô ấy sẽ hiểu nếu bạn giải thích tình thế cho cô ấy.)
• 3. He always (complain) ___complains___ if I’m late. (Anh ta luôn luôn phàn nàn nếu tôi đi muộn.)
• 4. If he spoke more clearly, we (understand)___would understand___ him. (Nếu anh ấy nói rõ ràng hơn thì chúng tôi đã hiểu anh ấy.)
• 5. If you (ask)___asked___ me, I would explain it to you. (Nếu bạn hỏi tôi, tôi sẽ giải thích cho bạn.)

Exercise 4. Rewrite the sentences, using conditional type 3. (Viết lại những câu sau, sử dụng câu điều kiện loại 3.)

Example:

He didn’t listen to his parents. He failed at the exam.

=> If he had listened to his parents, he wouldn’t have failed at the exam. (Nếu anh ấy nghe lời bố mẹ thì anh ấy đã không trượt kì thi.)

• 1. The thief left his gloves at the scene. He was arrested.
  => If the thief hadn’t left his gloves at the scene, he wouldn’t have been arrested. (Nếu tên trộm không để lại găng tay ở hiện trường thì hắn đã không bị bắt.)
• 2. I didn’t know you were coming to Hanoi. That’s why I went on holiday.
  => If I had known you were coming to Hanoi, I wouldn’t have gone on holiday. (Nếu tôi biết bạn sẽ đến Hà Nội thì tôi đã không đi nghỉ mát.)
• 3. She walked to the meeting. She was late.
  => If she hadn’t walked to the meeting, she wouldn’t have been late. (nếu cô ấu không đi bộ đến buổi họp thì cô ấy đã không bị muộn.)
• 4. The woman didn’t say what she wanted. I put the phone down.
  => If the woman had said what she wanted, I wouldn’t have put the phone down. (Nếu người phụ nữ nói ra cô ấy muốn gì thì tôi đã không dập máy.)
• 5. They didn’t arrive in time. They didn’t see the ceremony.
  => If they had arrived in time, they would have seen the ceremony. (Nếu họ đến kịp giờ thì họ đã được chứng kiến lễ kỉ niệm.)

Exercise 5. Write about what would have happened if you hadn't done the things you regret. (Viết xem điều gì sẽ đã xảy ra nếu bạn đã không làm những điều bạn hối tiếc.)

Example: If I had told my mother about the party, she wouldn’t have been so annoyed with me. (Nếu tôi nói cho mẹ về bữa tiệc, bà ấy sẽ không nổi nóng với tôi như vậy.)

• If I had studied harder, I wouldn’t have gotten low marks. (Nếu tôi học hành chăm chỉ hơn, tôi đã không bị điểm kém.)
• If I had brought an umbrella with me, I wouldn’t have gotten wet. (Nếu tôi mang ô theo, tôi đã không bị ướt.)
• If I had gotten up early in the morning, I wouldn’t have been late for school. (Nếu tôi dậy sớm vào buổi sáng thì tôi đã không muộn học.)

Exercise 6. Change the following conditional sentences into reported speech. (Chuyển những câu điều kiện dưới đây thành câu gián tiếp.)

• 1. “If you happen to see the man, send my regards to him,” he said to the girl.
  => He said to the girl (that) if she happened to see the man, send his regards to him. (Anh ta nói với cô gái rằng nếu cô ấy gặp người đàn ông đó, hãy gửi lời hỏi thăm của anh ấy đến người đàn ông đó.)
• 2. “I wouldn’t have been upset if she had written to me earlier,” the man said.
  => The man said (that) he would not have been upset if she had written to him earlier. (Người đàn ông nói rằng anh ấy sẽ không thất vọng nếu cô ấy viết thư cho mình sớm hơn.)
• 3. “The boss would complain if we didn’t report it to him,” David said to his colleagues.
  => David said to his colleagues that the boss would have complained if they hadn’t reported it to him. (David nói với đồng nghiệp rằng sếp sẽ phàn nàn nếu như họ không nói điều đó với ông ấy.)
• 4. “Mum would be cross if you went on doing like this,” the girl said to her younger brother.
  => The girl said to her younger brother that their mum/mother would have been cross if he had gone on doing like that. (Cô gái nói với em trai mình rằng mẹ của họ sẽ gạch đi nếu cậu ấy tiếp tục làm như vậy.)
• 5. “If you had taken your dad’s advice, you wouldn’t have made such a silly mistake,” the mother said to her son.
  => The mother said to her son (that) if he had taken his dad’s/father’s advice, he wouldn’t have made such a silly mistake. (Người mẹ nói với con trai rằng nếu anh ấy nghe theo lời khuyên của bố thì anh ấy đã không mắc phải lỗi ngốc nghếch như vậy.)
