Exercise 1.

A. Below are the transcriptions of some words. Write the orthographic forms of the words. (Dưới đây là phiên âm của 1 số từ. Viết từ đó.)

Example: /ai'die/ —> idea

• 1. /skeər/ => scarce
• 2. /skwi: z/ => squeeze
• 3. /,spəʃi'æliti/ => speciality
• 4. /'stʌmək/ => stomach
• 5. /'speiʃəs/ => spacious
• 6. /'stændəd/ => standard
• 7. /'skaiskreipə(r)/ => skyscraper
• 8. /spoil/ => spoil

B. Practise reading the following sentences. (Thực hành đọc những câu sau.)

1. Stanley asked his son to stop making speeches at school.
2. I can’t stand people speaking ill of me.
3. From dawn to dusk, he spends his time speculating the best score he could have made.
4. The man with a scar on his face standing next to me has just caused a scandal.

Exercise 2. Join the sentences, using whose. (Nối câu sử dụng từ "whose".)

1. There was a tall man at the funeral. His wife could not come because she was ill.
   => There was a tall man at the funeral whose wife could not come because she was ill. (Có một người đàn ông cao ở lễ tang mà vợ của ông ất không thể đến được vì bà ấy ốm.)
2. There was a journalist there. Her work took her to lots of different countries.
   => There was a journalist there whose work took her to lots of different countries. (Có 1 tay nhà báo ở đó mà có công việc dẫn cô ấy đến nhiều đất nước khác nhau.)
3. I met a lot of new people at the party. I can’t remember their names.
   => I met a lot of new people at the party whose names I can’t remember. (Tôi gặp rất hiều người mới ở bữa tệc mà tên của họ tôi lại không nhớ.)
4. I talked to a woman. Her car had broken down on the way to the party.
   => I talked to a woman whose car had broken down on the way to the party.(Tôi đã nói chuyện với một người phụ nữ mà xe của bà ấy bị hỏng trên đường đi đến bữa tiệc.)
5. I was introduced to a man. I had seen his brother on television the evening before.
   => I was introduced to a man whose brother I had seen on television the evening before. (Tôi được giới thiệu với một người đàn ông mà tôi đã nhìn thấy em trai của anh ta trên ti vi tối hôm trước.)

Exercise 3. Complete the sentences with "which" or "whose" (Hoàn thành câu với từ "which" hoặc "whose")

1. I'm working on a firm ___whose ___ main office is in London. (Tôi đang làm việc cho 1 công ty mà trụ sở chính ở Luân Đôn.)
2. The firm, ___which ____ employs five hundred people, makes video recorders. (Công ty mà tuyển 500 nhân viên sản xuất máy ghi hình.)
3. My boss, ___whose ____ work takes him to a lot of different countries, has decided he needs an assistant in London. That’s me. (Ông chủ của tôi người mà công việc dẫn ông ấy đến nhiều quốc gia khác nhau đã quyết định cần 1 trợ lý ở Luân Đôn. Người đó là tôi.)

Exercise 4. Complete the sentences with who, which, where, whose, or that. (Hoàn thành câu với những từ who, which, where, whose, hoặc that.)

1. The house __where__ I lived as a child has been pulled down now. (Ngôi nhà nơi tôi sống khi còn nhỏ bây giờ đã bị phá đổ.)
2. Stop him. He’s the man ___who/ that___ stole my wallet. (Hãy chặn anh ta lại. Anh ta là người đã lấy cắp ví tiền của tôi.)
3. There are many people__whose___ lives have been spoiled by that factory. (Có nhiều người mà nơi sinh sống của họ bị phá hủy bởi nhà máy đó.)

Exercise 5. Rewrite the sentences using the relative clauses. Supply the commas where necessary. (Viết lại những câu sau sử dụng đại từ quan hệ. Dùng dấu phẩy nếu cần.)

Example:

Zedco has ten thousand employees. It is an international company.

=> Zedco, which has ten thousand employees, is an international company. (Zedco, công ty mà có 10 000 nhân viên, là một công ty đa quốc gia.)

• 1. Vicky’s name was missed off the list, so she wasn’t very pleased.
  => Vicky, whose name was missed off the list, wasn’t very pleased. (Vicky, người mà không có tên trong danh sách, không được vui cho lắm.)
• 2. Laura painted a picture, and it’s being shown in an exhibition.
  => The picture which/that Laura painted is being shown in an exhibition. (Bức tranh mà Laura vẽ đang được trưng bày ở 1 cuộc triển lãm.)
• 3. We’re all looking forward to a concert. It’s next Saturday.
  => The concert which/that we are all looking forward to is next Saturday. (Buổi hòa nhạc mà chúng tôi đang mong đợi là thứ 7 tới.)
• 4. One week Mike and Harriet went camping. It was the wettest of the year.
  => The week which/that Mike and Harriet went camping was the wettest of the year. (Tuần mà Mike và Harriet đi cắm trại là tuần ẩm ướt nhất năm.)
• 5. Aunt Joan is a bit deaf, so she didn’t hear the phone.
  => Aunt Joan, who is a bit deaf, didn’t hear the phone. (Cô Loan, người hơi điếc, đã không nghe thấy điện thoại.)
• 6. You’ll meet Henry tomorrow. He’s also a member of the board.
  => Henry, who you’ll meet tomorrow, is also a member of the board. (Henry, người mà bạn sẽ gặp vào ngày mai, cũng là 1 thành viên của ban.)
• 7. I’ll see you near the post office. We met there the other day.
  => I’ll see you near the post office where we met the other day. (Tôi sẽ gặp bạn gần bưu điện nơi hôm trước chúng ta đã gặp nhau.)
