C. Speaking Unit 4: Volunteer Work

1. What was each of them called?

• The first woman was called “ The Saint of the Gutters”.
• The second woman was called “The fair lady”.
• The third woman was called “The People’s Princess”.

2. When were they born?

• The first woman was born in 1910.
• The second woman was born in 1929.
• The third woman was born in 1961.

3. When did they die?

• The first woman died in 1997.
• The second woman died in 199.
• The third woman died in 1997.

4. What were their major contributions?

• The first woman’s major contribution is setting up projects around the world to give care and comfort to poor and sick and children without children.
• The second woman’s major contributions are working as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, calling attention to starving children and raising money to help them.
• The third woman’s major contribution is using fame to focus attention on worldwide problems such as AIDS, drug addition and land mines.

5. What special qualities do you think they had that allowed them to make such famous contributions?

They are sympathetic, enthusiastic, responsible and their hearts are fulfil of love.

Exercise 2. Here are some challenges and rewards about doing some volunteer work. Read and put them in the right columns. (Đây là một vài thử thách và phần thưởng cho công việc tình nguyện. Đọc và đặt vào cột thích hợp.)

Exercise 3. Ask and answer questions about the special challenges and rewards of working in the following situations, you can use the information in Exercise 2. 1. volunteering in a home for the elderly (Tình nguyện ở nhà cho người già)
2. working for a nonprofit charity (làm việc cho một tổ chức từ thiện phi lợi nhuận)
3. working in remote mountainous and difficult areas (Làm việc ở vùng núi và vùng khó khăn)
4. giving care and comfort to the poor or the sick (chăm sóc người nghèo và người bệnh)
5. raising money to help the starving children (gây quỹ giúp trẻ đói)
6. focusing attention on social problems such as AIDS or drug addiction (tập trung vào các vấn đề xã hội như AIDS hoặc hút chích)
7. providing education for handicapped children (giáo dục cho trẻ khuyết tật)

Example:

• B: I’m helping people in the mountainous areas.
• A: What’s the most challenging thing about doing the volunteer work?
• B: For me, the most challenging thing about doing the volunteer work is finding a way to fit into the community.
• A: And what’s the most rewarding thing?
• B: One of the things I find the most rewarding is seeing children develop confidence.
